How Home Plumbing Systems Work, Plumbing Improvements
If you have ever gone camping for a
weekend, you know it doesn’t take long to miss running water, flushing
toilets, clean clothes, and hot showers. These modern conveniences and
more are the benefits of plumbing systems. Your house has several
separate plumbing systems. Water-supply pipes bring pressurized water
from the utility or a well to your house, where it is piped to sinks,
toilets, washers, bathtubs, and related fixtures. Larger pipes drain
waste and vent sewer gases. And many homes have piped-in natural gas for
gas-burning appliances such as dryers and furnaces. In an emergency, you
should know how to turn off the water quickly before it ruins floors and
walls. The main shutoff valve is located either outside where the
main water supply enters, or just inside—particularly in cold climates.
Turn the valve clockwise to shut it off. Call your utility company if
the problem requires a valve between the street and the house to be shut
off

Heaters Makes Since!

How Does a Tankless Water Heater
Work? |
|
|
1. A hot water tap is opened... |
 |
|
2. The water enters the heater. |
|
3. A water flow sensor detects the water flow.
|
|
4. The computer automatically ignites the burner.
|
|
5. The water circulates through the heat exchanger
(coil). |
|
6. The heat exchanger instantly heats the water
at the designated temperature. (this takes only 5
seconds) |
|
7. The heater can provide you with endless hot water
continuously.
No more running out of hot water in the middle of a
shower! |
|
8. When the hot water tap is turned off, the unit
shuts down automatically |

Demand (or instantaneous) water heaters
eliminate the storage tank by heating water directly when
there is a call for hot water. These units are experiencing
a growing popularity in the U.S. The energy consumption of
these units may be lower since standby losses from the
storage tank are eliminated. Demand water heaters make the
most sense in homes with natural gas and easily coordinated
water requirements. Look for a model with electronic
ignition to eliminate the energy consumed by a continuously
burning pilot light.

Gas shutoff devices stop the flow of

How To Read Your Home's Water
Meter
By learning to
read your water meter, you'll easily be able to keep track
of water usage in your home, as well as detect any leaks in
the system.

Your home's water usage is
probably measured by one of three meter types. The six-dial
meter (above left) is most common. Five of its six dials
(labeled 10, 100, 1000, 10,000, and 100,000 for the number
of cubic feet of water they record per revolution) are
divided into tenths; the needles of the 10,000 and 100
meters move clockwise, and the other three move
counterclockwise. The remaining dial, usually undivided,
measures a single cubic foot per revolution. To read the
six-dial meter, begin with the 100,000 dial, noting the
smaller of the two numbers nearest the needle. Then read the
dial labeled 10,000, and so on. This meter reads 628,260
cubic feet
The five-dial
meter (above center) is read in exactly the same way as the
six-dial meter, except that single cubic feet are measured
by a large needle that sweeps over the entire face of the
meter. The meter in this example reads 458,540 cubic feet.
The
digital-readout meter (above right) looks like an automobile
odometer. This type of meter may also have a small dial that
measures a single cubic foot per revolution.
You can monitor
the water used by a specific appliance by simply subtracting
the "before" reading from the "after" reading of your meter.
To track down a possible leak, turn off all the water
outlets in the house and note the position of the
1-cubic-foot dial on your meter. After 30 minutes, check the
dial. If the needle has moved, you have a leak.
