Are you having trouble with your shower head or want a new one? No problem. Showerhead installation can either be done by a professional or by yourself in a few simple steps. Here’s what you need to know about how to replace a showerhead.
Preparation and Removing your Shower Head
First, you must make sure you have everything you need before starting. You will need your new shower head, a wrench, a rag and plumber’s tape. Now grab your wrench and attach it to the notch connecting your shower head. Grip the wrench at the bottom of the handle for more leverage. You are going to turn it counter-clockwise until it is loose, and then remove the old head. Once you do, do not throw it away in case your new shower head does not fit correctly.
Clean, Tape and Apply Your New Shower Head
Now that you have removed your old shower head, you have to clean the pipe with a rag. After a while, there can be buildup of hard water, dirt and other gunk that goes through your pipes. Then take the plumber’s tape, and wrap the thread clockwise in the direction the fixture will be tightened. If wrapped in the opposite direction, it may start tearing when applying the new head. The tape will act as a seal, so there are no leaks once you turn the shower on. You can then put on your new shower head, and screw it on clockwise.
Check for Leaks
There is one last thing you need to do to make sure you did the job right. Turn on the shower, and see if there are any leaks. If there isn’t, then good job. If there are, you may need to tighten the showerhead more. If you do that and it is still leaking, check if you taped the pipe correctly or look to see if you cleaned the pipe enough for the tape to stick. If all else fails, you can call Gotelli Plumbing!
