What Causes Low Shower Pressure? [And How To Fix It!]

February 1, 2023 | Blog

Whether you’re getting ready for the day or are unwinding after a long day, a refreshing shower is the ultimate cure-all to get you back on your feet. That’s why dealing with low water pressure in the shower can be frustrating.

The difference between a drizzle and a spray can make or break your showering experience. When your water pressure is running low, you may have to spend more time scrubbing and washing off — and the water may feel colder because it’s covering less of your skin.

Fortunately, if you’re experiencing water fluctuations in the shower, you can wash your shower troubles away. Gotelli Plumbing has created a homeowner-friendly guide for diagnosing your low water concerns and fixing the issue right at home with the following tips and tricks.

How Do I Know If I Have Low Water Pressure?

The best way to determine if your shower pressure is low is to run a simple, three-step test. All you need is a measuring jug and a timer! It’s just that easy.

  • Step 1: Place a measuring jug (preferably 1-2 liters in size) underneath the shower.
  • Step 2: Turn the shower on to its full capacity.
  • Step 3: Set a timer and see how long it takes for the jug to be entirely filled. If it takes longer than six seconds, chances are you have a water pressure issue. The ideal water flow rate is about 10 liters per minute.

What Causes Low Water Pressure?

There are many reasons why your shower pressure may be running low. We’ve highlighted the most common causes of irregular or poor shower pressure below so that you can easily detect any or all issues in your household.

Partially Closed Valve

One of the most common issues that can lead to fluctuating water pressure is if the water is obstructed by a partially closed valve. A home typically has one main shutoff valve found inside the house (usually under the kitchen sink), where the main water supply regulates throughout the home.

Locate all shutoff valves on the main water supply line if you think a partially closed valve is causing low water pressure in your home. Test each valve to guarantee it is functioning properly. If you discover any that are leaking or damaged, contact a plumber to have them repaired or replaced.

Debris Residue In The Pipes

A clogged pipe can easily reduce water pressure, which can be caused by debris such as dirt, grease and other foreign objects. Contaminants can clog pipes if they back up as a result of water main fractures. As a result, the buildup creates pipe blockages, which creates low water pressure because there is little to no room for the water to flow regularly.

A tip to fix this issue is to allow the showerhead to soak in a container with vinegar in order to eliminate debris buildup. Next, scrub or scrape any remaining sediment from the showerhead openings with a small tool or cleaning brush. Making sure you are maintaining the cleanliness of your piping system will prevent this from becoming a future issue.

Corroded Water Lines

The most significant and expensive issue in regards to low water pressure is the case of corroded water lines. When old water pipes corrode over time, they do so on the inside of the pipe. Because this issue accumulates over time, the decrease in water flow is gradual — you will notice any changes in pressure instantly. Unfortunately, the only solution for corroded water lines is to entirely re-work the foundation with copper or plastic water supply piping.

Failing Pressure Regulator

A failing pressure regulator is another common cause of low water pressure in the household. A pressure regulator is a control valve that lowers the input pressure in your drainage system to a stabilized level that will not cause significant damage to your pipes.

A malfunctioning pressure regulator can lead to a significant increase in water pressure in homes that do not have them. It may even have the reverse effect of causing an unexpected drop in water pressure. When the pressure regulator fails, the impact will be felt by all of the installations in the house, and it will happen suddenly. It’s best to have a qualified plumber evaluate the piece and replace it in this situation.
