Backflow Preventer Installation

Backflow is when used water flows back into the water supply. This contamination can be harmful to your home and its plumbing, drains and sewer systems, leaving it vulnerable to leaks and corrosion. What Is Backflow?

Simply put, backflow occurs when the conditions of the water system cause water to flow in the wrong direction, back into the plumbing systems rather than out of it.

There are two kinds of backflow: back-pressure and back-siphonage.

Back-pressure occurs when water is forced to flow in the opposite direction due to pressure downstream increasing the system pressure.

Back-siphonage occurs when a sudden drop in pressure causes the suction of used or contaminated water back into the water supply.

For example, let’s say a homeowner uses pesticides in their lawn, then waters the yard and water pools around a sprinkler head. Then the fire hydrant down the street is used, causing a sudden drop in water pressure. The water around the sprinkler head can be sucked back into the potable (public) water supply, contaminating the community’s drinking water supply.

Backflow Preventer Installation In Marin and Sonoma Counties

In order to stop used water from reentering your plumbing, a backflow preventer can be installed on your home’s pipes. It prevents water from being siphoned or forced back into the potable water supply.

3 Types Of Backflow Preventers

There are several different types of backflow preventers, ranging in design, cost, reliability and more. Understanding each kind of backflow preventer is important if you’re looking to have one installed in your home. While your plumber will help you determine which of these options is best for you, the final decision is yours.

Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assemblies

The most commonly used assembly is the pressure vacuum breaker, which has the simplest design — making it easy to install, maintain and repair. This assembly prevents back-siphonage only, not back-pressure.

Reduced Pressure Zone Assemblies (RPZ)

RPZs are the most complex and expensive backflow preventers but, when functioning properly, are the most reliable. This type of backflow preventer can be installed either above or below ground, although above-ground is preferred, and protects against both back-siphonage and back-pressure.

Double-Check Valve Assemblies (DCA)

Double-check valve assemblies are the best option for underground or indoor installations. DCAs are the most commonly approved underground backflow preventer, although they can also be installed above ground depending on the installation code for your area.

Tom did a great job of installing a shut off valve for our refrigerator’s water supply and was excellent at explaining everything. He also replaced our thermal expansion tank after quickly identifying a problem with the old one.
To be sure, this was a difficult project. All in all it included repairing two different cast iron pipes and a sink trap. We had a smoke test done to find the leak and the contractor for that company said "If anyone can figure this out, it's Tom." I couldn't agree more. He's so well versed on how everything is tied together and the possibilities for failure from everything including our brand new, super modern German sink to our 70+ year old cast iron sewer system. He also installed our on demand water heater. Seriously quality and conscientious work. I'd highly recommend Tom for any plumbing issue at your home.
Truly a professional operation...from the person who picked up the phone to schedule the visit to the plumber who came out and fixed our water heater same day. Service at a level you don't find too often these days. Gotelli is our go to plumber from here forward.
Wonderful service! I would call them again in a heartbeat. Gotelli responded to my distress at the loss of my water heater more quickly than anyone else. Sebastian Ruvalcaba was an absolute pleasure to work with. He came out, analyzed the problem, explained it clearly, offered options, completed all the work the very next day, and even did a great job of cleaning up after the work was completed. I will recommend Gotelli to everyone I know who might need their services.

I wanted to take a minute to thank Jason and Sebastian for their great work. We were in a bit of a hurry to replace a water heater with guests coming the next day and they made it happen. They were responsive, friendly, and reasonably priced. Sebastian was a champ, as he was under our house replacing a line for hours. Strong recommendation.
Great work, friendly service.
Steve was very efficient and thorough. He was friendly and communicated well. The service was excellent. I found the cost to be very high for the simplicity of the job, however.
A couple days ago, I used Gotelli Plumbing. Great experience!! Reasonable pricing, job completed in reasonable time frame, cleaned up after job completion. Additionally, I would like to commend the technician, Tom Robertson. He demonstrated by being upbeat, cheerful, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. I would definitely use them in the future and highly recommend them.

Very nice guy, Mack I think, but your telephone service is terrible! I was Not told that I paid and additional $575 for a sewer lateral when that is what I asked for. I will not do a call like that again!
