Why Is My Water Heater Leaking From The Top?

We know that any problem with your hot water heater is a frustrating hassle to experience. Water leaks are a cause for concern, especially if you aren’t sure what’s causing this slippery situation. A leak from the top of your system is almost always repairable.

Gotelli Plumbing is here to keep your plumbing system free from pesky leaks! Although water heater leaks from the top of your system aren’t as destructive, they must be addressed quickly to avoid secondary problems with the machinery. Keep reading to learn how to address this issue and dodge damage to your unit.

How To Tell If Your Water Heater Is Leaking

Water heater leaks can be detrimental to your system. Occasionally, your heater will produce condensation that may mimic a leaky unit. It’s essential to look out for other telltale signs, such as pooling water around the machinery.

A change in water temperature or pressure can also indicate a leak in the tank. Listen for hissing or dripping sounds from the heater to determine if there’s a problem. Acting swiftly to address leaks can save you from costly repairs, saving you money on your system long-term!

Causes Of A Leak From The Top Of A Water Heater

Unfortunately, plumbing problems are inevitable. Issues with your water heater are no exception! There are multiple causes for a leak from the top of your system, many of which can be corrected by a licensed professional.

Cold Water Inlet Valve

The inlet and outlet pipes are common sources of leaks. Check this valve to see if the running water is leaking. If there is dripping from the valve, try tightening the connection. If the water continues trickling, a valve replacement may be the best solution to the problem.

Loose Or Corroded Pipe Fittings

The fittings and connections on top of the water heater can become loose over time, resulting in leaks. Check for any visible signs of seeping water around the connections and tighten them if necessary. Faulty or deteriorated gaskets or seals may also lead to leaks and require replacement.

Temperature And Pressure Relief Valve

The purpose of the temperature and pressure relief valve is to control temperature and pressure within your heater. This valve is located on top of your tank and can produce water leaks if an issue arises. If you notice water dripping from the threads of this valve, it may be best to replace it all together.

This safety feature protects your water heater from excessive pressure buildup within your tank. Monitoring it for leaks and other problems will protect your unit from additional issues.

How Do I Stop The Leak?

To stop water from escaping your system, you must first find the cause of the leak. Shut off your water heater before looking for its source. Gas water heaters should have a dial or switch to turn off. Electric water heaters can be turned off by turning off the circuit breaker on your electrical panel.

Once the system is off, find the cold water inlet. Leaving the cold water inlet on will allow you to see where the water is spreading from. Dry off the top of the heater where the inlet connects with the tank. If you can’t see water dripping out anywhere, press a paper towel down and see where the water soaking it is coming from. You can also check the pipes and seals for leaking.

Turn the cold water inlet off once you’ve located the source of the problem. Doing so will prevent water from trickling out and causing damage before you can correct the problem.
